A tornado is a spinning, whirling wind. When it meets with cold air it takes the shape of a long funnel or tube, reaching down from a large cloud. It is formed when warm air near the earth's surface rises and meets with cold air.
Tornadoes can reach speeds of more than 250 mph.
In Kansas, USA, a hailstone fell that was 44.5 centimetres across!
My friends and I went to the forest for a picnic. We planned that camping for a long time and prepared well, taking a lot of food from sleeping bags and tents. After lunch, the sky turned dark and we thought it was starting to rain. Suddenly a stormy wind began and we felt its strength. At the same moment, large hailstones began to fall. They hit our tents, destroyed our food. We were in a panic. There was just a forest and rain and hail all around. Fortunately, we remembered that there was a dugout in the forest and we waited out this nightmare underground. When the hail was over, we went home.
