🔊 Francis Drake departed from Plymouth, England and crossed the Atlantic Ocean towards South America. He decided to sail through the Strait of Magellan, which separates South America and the group of islands called Tierra del Fuego, but when he reached the Pacific Ocean, a violent storm carried his ships south. Francis Drake discovered Cape Horn and a new strait, later called Drake Passage. He then sailed north along the coast of South America, attacking Spanish ports and ships. Finally, he came to North America. He landed in the area of??present-day San Francisco and took some rest before crossing the Pacific Ocean to the Moluccas and reaching the Cape of Good Hope, the southern tip of Africa. He rounded the cape, reached Cape Verde, the western tip of Africa, and returned to England.
