I) About a hundred years ago, the sleeping volcano on the small island of Krakatoa erupted (1). Nearly all the island disappeared. Gases lifted rocks and ash 16 kilometres up in the air. A giant hole opened in the sea (2). Fishing boats disappeared into the hole (3). A giant wave carried some boats many kilometres away. One boat landed in a town three kilometres away from the sea (4). The volcano erupted at 10 o’clock in the morning and people in Australia, four thousand kilometres away, heard it at two o’clock in the afternoon (5). The sun disappeared behind a cloud of ash and it was dark for three days (6).
