1. Now, when I have already lived a week in an English family in Brighton, let me tell you a little about the modern food traditions in England. To begin with – about breakfast, which is very different here from that my mother prepares for me. Breakfast is very light: cornflakes or muesli with milk, toasts with jam and a cup of coffee. Dinner is even more unusual in comparison with our Russian dinner of four dishes we got used to eat. No soup, no fish or meat with side dish. Usually I have a lunchbox for dinner: a couple of sandwiches with ham or cheese, an apple or a banana, biscuits and some drink. A lot of English people prefer such dinner. The only homemade food is supper. I like it most of all. Usually they serve green salad, roast chicken or beef and a very tasty dessert. Everybody in the host family prefers ice-cream. And I like homemade baked things which are called “hotchpotch”. I’d like to know the recipe and prepare this dessert at home, when I come back. I think, my parents will be proud of my cooking abilities.
2. – Excuse me, is it far to the open market from here? – No, it’s a two minute walk from here. I’ve just been there. – And how do you like it? – Wonderful. I have been buying products there for 5 years already – since we moved to this neighbourhood. Everything I buy there is always very fresh. – And what about the prices? – They are very moderate, I should say. – Thank you.
